Ms Josephine Koh established Josephine Koh Music Studio
in 1995. Structured in quasi-conservatoire style,
JKMS has developed into a distinctive school of musical
excellence under her direction. Ms Koh’s areas
of specialism include teaching music theory and diplomas
in piano performance.
Trained
as a professional concert pianist, Ms Koh completed
her music education in Italy under internationally
renowned teacher and competition adjudicator Mastro
Vincenzo Balzani. She was a semifinalist in the International
Piano Competition of Valsesia and has since performed
extensively in Europe as recitalist and accompanist.
Concerts were held in Milan, Germany, London and Switzerland.
She obtained L(MUS)TCL teacher’s diploma in
compositional techniques and ARCM piano performance
in London during that period. A graduate in English
and Professional Management from the Open University
UK, Ms Koh completed her early academic studies at
Raffles Girls’ Secondary School and Raffles
Junior College.
Ms Josephine Koh began her teaching career as lecturer
of piano technique, harmony and counterpoint at the LaSalle-
SIA College of the Arts from 1987-1990. She was appointed
music tutor at the Centre for the Arts, National University
of Singapore from 1986-2004. In 2005, she became Music
Director of the NUS Harmonica Orchestra. Her role includes
conducting the orchestra, teaching music arrangement and
leading the group towards further growth and development
in the Asia region.
Wells Music Publishers, a music publishing house and bookshop
was established in 2005. As managing director and resident
author, Ms Koh continues to write educational materials
for music teachers and students. Many have known her internationally
as the author of the series Practice in Music Theory
Grades 1-8, Practice in Music
Theory for the Little Ones and Rhythmatics. Her most recent
publications include Scales & Arpeggios-Fingering
Method Grades 1-8 and Quick Study Practice for Diploma
Students.
As a consultant, Ms Koh provides mentorship to young
talented music students and aspiring teachers. In keeping
with the nation’s efforts to develop the arts, Ms
Koh was also invited by the Ministry of Community Development,
Youth and Sports to speak at the Personal Work-Life Effectiveness
Seminar. She actively continues to conduct workshops and seminars
for music teachers and has been an adjudicator in various music competitions.
In September 2009, Ms Josephine Koh was appointed artist in South-East Asia for
Bonsendorfer of Vienna, Austria. She now prepares for her future piano performances
on the Bosendorfer Concert model 225.
